Eject!

8 06 2008

USAF Thunderbirds Opposing Solo Pilot Capt Chris R. Stricklin, misjudged his altitude before beginning his Split-S takeoff maneuver at Mt Home AFB on Sunday, September 14th, 2003. When Capt. Stricklin realized his error, he banked the A/C away from the spectators and ejected, a split second before the plane impacted the ground in a massive fireball.

Made a DOB Circuit

29 04 2008

In Digital Electronics class I made a Date of Birth circuit. Not incredibly amazing but I made it from scratch pretty much. Take a look.

Ps: Sorry about the crappy quality. It was filmed on a regular digital camera and then YouTube did not make it any better.

This happens when you don’t properly vent a sealed storage tank

24 04 2008

It appears that this was a safety demonstration for some workers in Germany I believe. What happened is the hot gas was in a sealed container and it cooled.  The air pressure difference between the inside and the outside was so great that the structure compromised instantaneously. Shocking.

Test firing of new NASA methane rocket engine

21 04 2008

This new kind of prototype rocket engine, fueled by methane, was built by Alliant Techsystems/XCOR Aerospace.  Although it is not ready for space this engine will by key to exploring the far reaches of space.  Simply breathtaking, take a look.

Electric-assist hybrid bicycle

15 04 2008

OHM released a new line of bikes that are “electric-assist hybrid bicycles”. This means you can either pedal under your own power, pedal with some help from the motor, or not pedal at all and let the bike do all of the work for you, aka “lazy fatass setting”. But if you are fine with pedaling you can charge the battery while pedaling. Cool right. Although the charging cycle is kinda pointless because of the nice Li-ion batteries. In the power mode that runs the bike at 200-300% power, the bike can reach a distance of 19 mi on a full battery. And in power mode 25-35% the bike can reach a distance of 74 mi. OHM makes 4 different breeds of these electric-assist hybrid bicycles. Two urban types and two sporty types. The urban types go for $2,195-$2,995 and the sporty types range from $3,450-$3,875.

LittleDog

9 04 2008

Just visited Penn today and I got to meet LittleDog. LittleDog is a “quadruped robot for research on learning locomotion.” Very neat I must say. LittleDog was made by a DARPA, (Defense Advanced Research Project Agency), funded company called Boston Dynamics. You may have heard of their more popular projects such as LittleDog’s big brother BigDog. The goal of the BigDog project is to be a rough-terrain robotic pack mule for soldiers, pretty neat.
